A mastermind session: personal development in Czech

🟡 Today, we skipped the Czech lesson. And it was great!
My women’s speaking group tried something new: a mastermind session.
Each of them shared something she’s currently dealing with: work, family, relationships, ...and the others offered questions, support, and perspective.
There were no grammar points, no set topic.
Just 4 real conversations, each for one of them. All in Czech.
I didn’t correct anything. I just helped with a word if needed and let the group do the rest.
"The biggest AHA moment for me was when we did the Mastermind. That connection between real life and language learning was mind-blowing for me. We can learn and at the same time talk about real, current issues, and we don’t need to have perfect Czech to do that."
-Christine Ates, Canada

I’ve been in a mastermind group myself for over a year (https://lnkd.in/etDenydA), led by the amazing Nina Hanáková, and it’s been one of the most helpful parts of my teaching life.
Nina started running mastermind sessions with her English students, too, and that inspired me to try it with mine.
And honestly, it was one of my favourite sessions.
So much honesty, depth, and connection, in a language many of them still believe they’re “not good enough” at. 😊
Here’s what some of the ladies shared afterwards:
🟡 “𝑇ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡. 𝐼𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑚𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑦. 𝐶𝑎𝑛 𝑤𝑒 𝑑𝑜 𝑖𝑡 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛?”
🟡 “𝐼 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠. 𝑊𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟.”
🟡 “𝐼 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒’𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑔𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑠. 𝐼 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒.”
🟡 “𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑎 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑛 𝑎 𝑑𝑒𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙.”
If you're an expat woman in the Czech Republic around A2-B1 and craving honest, meaningful conversations in Czech, you'll love this group!
