Why is it so difficult to study Czech from a textbook?

Recently, I had a call with one of my wonderful clients, and she said something that made me write this post:
“I recently bought a couple of Czech textbooks… and they’re still in the plastic.”
She also said:
– I know there are a lot of resources.
– But I just don’t know how to organize myself.
Maybe you have a similar stack of Czech textbooks at home.
Maybe you’ve told yourself more than once:
“I’ll start properly next week.”
But the reason textbooks don’t work for you (even if you take them out of the plastic) is that they’re often not relevant to your real-life situation.
And then you start thinking you’re “bad at Czech,” when in reality, you just don’t have a clear system.
If you’re someone who enjoys books, they can be a great supplement or a source of exercises. But in my opinion, they shouldn’t be the centre of your study plan.

So what should be?
Your life.
Your specific real-life situation that you want to handle in Czech.
If you have a thousand resources and don’t know where to start, begin by asking yourself:
What do I want to be able to handle in Czech in the next few months?
What specific situation?
Not “improve my Czech.”
But something like:
“In May, I want to sit at my partner’s family table and understand what’s going on.”
“I want to handle a doctor’s appointment without switching to English.”
Then describe it in as much detail as possible:
- Who do I want to speak with?
- Will we use formal or informal language?
- What topics do I want to talk about?
- Do I need past tense? Future tense? Etc.
This is actually one of the very first things I do with new clients.
We set a very specific goal.
Then we look for the right methods, resources, and techniques to work toward that goal.
And usually, within just a few weeks, we already see a big shift in how they feel about their Czech.
Only after you define the goal should you start choosing resources.
Not the other way around.
Otherwise, your study system will never truly make sense.
And if you'd also like to build a clear system for your Czech and feel more confident in real-life conversations, you can book a free strategy call with me. We'll look at your current situation and define specific next steps that actually make sense for you. Book here.
