“I want to learn Czech” is the worst goal you can set.
Why?
It’s like trying to reach a destination but constantly changing the route, so you never actually get there.
One of my amazing clients was once in a car accident, and she had no idea how to explain what happened in Czech. Calling the tow truck, pressing the right options in the menu, trying to communicate the issue. It was overwhelming.
So she came to me and said: “I never want to feel that lost again. I want to be prepared.”
She didn’t just say, “I want to improve my Czech.”
She set an extremely specific goal:
👉 "In one month, I want to be able to confidently understand and handle a car accident situation in Czech."
And together, we made it happen.
✅ She listened to a podcast about car accidents on repeat.
✅ She wrote down key phrases and drilled them with Anki flashcards.
✅ We generated a realistic phone conversation with ChatGPT and roleplayed it together (first with video, then without - to simulate a real situation.)
✅ I recorded audio flashcards, so she could practice in real-life speed.
A month later, she reflected on her progress:
✔️ “I definitely understand more, even though I don’t catch every word.”
✔️ “Anki and audio flashcards are helping me a lot.”
✔️ “I used to want everything to be perfect, but I realized I don’t need that. I need practical skills for daily life.”
✔️ “Now I know the right words to explain an accident and handle a call with the tow truck.”
Her goal was so specific that she simply couldn’t fail. And I couldn’t be more proud of her! :)
Here’s the problem with vague goals:
❌ "I just want to improve my Czech."
→ No direction. No urgency. No real progress.
✅ "In one month, I want to confidently handle a conversation at the doctor’s office."
→ Focused, measurable, and achievable.
